Tom Dayan started drumming as a kid in St. Louis, Missouri, at Drum HQ under Mark Miller. Composition entered the picture a bit later, drawn in early on by Bach's music, and by the time he was choosing where to study, composition felt like the way to get the most out of the institution he had in mind.
He studied classical composition at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance under Prof. Michael Wolpe, and picked up a couple of early prizes along the way — the 2007 Bouzoule Festival for the piano quartet "Milestones," and the 2008 Chana Yador-Avny Competition for the percussion duet "Affar."
He moved to Berlin in 2009, and has stayed since — playing, composing, and teaching. His own band, Mifrás, has been on hold for a few years now. These days most of his playing happens with the Composers' Orchestra Berlin, where he's been a drummer and composer for most of the orchestra's 15-year history.
